Cultural Village Project and Schools of Living Traditions, Launched in Davao del Norte

For a nation to forward, it must look backwards and learn.

Looking back and promoting it further is what three municipalities in Davao del Norte are doing with the launch of the Cultural Village Project and Schools of Living Traditions, aimed to ensure survival and integrity of the cultural heritage and traditions of Davao del Norte's Indigenous Peoples (IPs), Philippine Information Agency writes.

Tribal town of Talaingod and the Schools of Living Traditions in the municipalities of Kapalong and San Isidro now have community-based culture tourism-oriented project with the goal of uplifting the quality of life of the IPs, promoting social commission and culture of peace, as well as energizing the tourism industry in the province.

This was made possible via cooperation efforts of Department of Tourism-XI Regional Director Sonia Garcia and Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario along with Mayor Pilar Libayao, Kapalong Mayor Edgardo Timbol and San Isidro Mayor Tomas Abelito.

This project adds to Davao del Norte's growing cultural tourism efforts which also include historical tour, banana biz tour, eco-adventure tourism and culinary tourism. The cultural village of Talaingod showcases unique indigenous products, such as weaves, beadings and other native handicrafts that the IP community produced themselves.

Tourism Director Garcia stressed, "the project is not just about tourism, but more importantly about the preservation and enrichment of the culture and identity of the indigenous peoples in the province."

Talaingod is a gateway to the Davao region"s cultural tourism development, and is also a threshold to tremendous socio-economic opportunities, particularly with the forthcoming opening of the P1.6 billion Talaingod-Bukidnon Road hopefully late this year.
